  1. Persistence/DeskClock

  3. More than two years ago, a friend and I created bit images which look like 
  4. raised pieces of the gray desktop. The idea was to make a clock that is 
  5. built into the desk. In the months since then, we figured out what was 
  6. necessary to do it, and it involved a bunch of patching. We had to patch 
  7. QuickDraw to watch while the Finder drew icons so that we could avoid 
  8. writing over them. Allan Foster wanted to keep his ShowINIT icons visible 
  9. after some nasty one (AppleShare, perhaps?) called InitWindows. 
  10. Surprisingly enough, the two hacks (we dubbed Allan's "Persistence") 
  11. needed almost exactly the same code. We merged them and the happy results 
  12. are on the Hacks disk.

  16. Tech. Note 31 is an exciting discussion of every aspect of Clarus, the 
  17. DogCow. One mentioned in particular is the "wrong way" to show him. (The 
  18. likeness of Scott "ZZ" Zimmerman, printing guru in Apple DTS is the wrong 
  19. way!) Ed Tecot, Nevin Liber, and Darin Adler decided that DTS deserved the 
  20. "wrong way" on their machines. We developed code and graphics to change 
  21. the holy image of the DogCow into the classic Mac-a-Mug appearance of ZZ 
  22. himself. This code was all written after midnight on April 3rd. We 
  23. installed it on all the machines in DTS that morning before 5 AM. All the 
  24. files were dated April 1st; we hope the folks in DTS appreciated it. Ha, 
  25. ha.
